Jr. High Electives - 1st Semester
Junior High electives are back! Below you will find descriptions of the exciting offerings for the first semester. Students are to sign up for one Wednesday elective and one Thursday elective. Sign-ups will be available after 9:00 am on Monday, August 6th through August 13th. Keep in mind that elective sign-ups are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Choir: The Choir elective is open to any student interested in singing and improving vocal technique and confidence.  Students will learn sight-reading and harmony and have the opportunity to perform at school programs (Christmas and Spring), special events and at school prayer services and liturgies.  Choir is a yearlong elective. (Thursdays)

Movie Soundtracks: The Movie Soundtracks elective will focus on composers including John Williams, Michael Kamen, James Horner and Hans Zimmer among others.  This course will highlight memorable movie scores, both current and past and explore the importance and use of music in the movies. (Wednesdays) 

Painting/Illustration: Students will do both painting and drawing in this elective.  Each student will be given a sketchbook to draw and sketch ideas in for their paintings. There will be a mixture of mediums used. Students will get to use pencil, ink, tempera and watercolor.  Weather-permitting, students will be able to go outside to draw from nature. This class can help students enhance drawing skills and give them a chance to do more student directed projects. (Thursdays) 

Photography: In this introductory photography course, students will learn basic photography skills. Students will get the chance to go outside to take pictures as well as practice portrait photography. Students will be provided with a camera and will use their tablets to upload their photos. Having a usb/jump drive to store photos would be helpful to have but not necessary. (Wednesdays)

Book Club: - Readers! Come read, discuss and share together the book: The Compound by S. A. Bodeen. This award-winning book is a favorite YA read because “the exciting plot twists and explosive action keeps the reader engaged.”

Rock Band: Calling all guitarists, bassists, drummers and singers! This course is for those musicians who would like to play alongside other musicians in a rock band format. Each musician will be grouped into bands with other musicians according to what they play. Those bands will then write, record and perform their original songs. Some basic instrument experience necessary. (Thursdays)

All Girls Advanced Physical Education: This course will provide learning opportunities for girls to further develop skills and knowledge related to fitness, physical competence, cognitive understanding and positive attitudes about physical activity. Girls will acquire knowledge and skills in recreational, athletic and lifetime activities through active participation, sportsmanship and teamwork. Possible units include basketball,hockey, outdoor fitness,flag football and soccer. (Wednesdays) 

All Boys Advanced Physical Education: This course will provide learning opportunities for boys to further develop skills and knowledge related to fitness, physical competence, cognitive understanding and positive attitudes about physical activity. Students will acquire knowledge and skills in recreational, athletic and lifetime activities through active participation, sportsmanship and teamwork. Possible units include ultimate frisbee, hockey, outdoor living skills, weightlifting, flag football and soccer. (Both Wednesdays and Thursdays) 

Adobe Photoshop CC This course is an introductory course designed to teach the coolest yet complex graphic and image-editing program to students. In Adobe Photoshop CC 2017, students will learn how to edit and manipulate images, easily navigate the Photoshop interface, crop and resize, work with layers, paint using many tools, add text, use gradients and use filters. Students will enjoy creating a graffiti wall, animated GIFs, a self-potrait, a film poster and a photo restoration.  (Both Wednesdays and Thursdays) 

Culinary Arts: A hands-on culinary cooking and baking curriculum for young people. This class will introduce students to the pleasure of preparing and enjoying delicious “real food” that they prepare! Students will learn basic cooking and baking skills, the joy of eating and cooking with all kinds of food! $80 supply fee for this course. (Both Wednesdays and Thursdays) 

Alpha Jump Entrepreneur Club: This yearlong elective is for students who are interested in entrepreneurship!  Alpha Jump is a program sponsored by St. Ignatius High School that fosters student interest in becoming an entrepreneur! Students will participate in a “Shark Tank” type of competition!  Students must be available to compete if they choose this elective. The students will also participate in mini-competitions throughout the school year with a chance to win cash prizes. (Wednesdays)

STEM: Biomedical Engineering: Biomedical Engineering is the application of engineering principles and design concepts to the fields of biology and medicine.  In this elective, students will be introduced to the field, challenged to design devices and gain hands on experiences with biomedical technologies. (Thursdays)

Instant Challenge: In a world full of technology integration, this elective fosters the life skills that students need to be successful like teamwork, creativity, problem solving and critical thinking skills.  The students will work together in teams each time class meets to find a solution to a given challenge using the above mentioned skills! (Thursdays) 

Journey with Jesus: Join Deacon Vince in exploring our Catholic faith in a retreat-like setting. If you are interested in becoming closer with Jesus and deepening your relationship with Him, you won’t want to miss this opportunity! This will be a safe and open environment to share personal testimonies, delve into scripture, listen to peers and reflect on your faith journey as you develop a deeper sense of Jesus in your life. (Both Wednesdays and Thursdays) 

Spanish Enrichment: If you are interested in developing a deeper understanding of the Spanish language – join Spanish Enrichment! This elective will provide the opportunity to work with a Spanish expert who will provide both challenges as well as support for those interested in the Spanish language and cultures. The program will develop according to student need and interest. (Both Wednesdays and Thursdays)

Study Hall: By teacher request only. (Both Wednesdays and Thursdays)

Handbells: Are you interested in making music?  Do you like to work with others?  Playing handbells will give you an experience of playing a musical instrument one, two, or more bells at a time while working with others.  If you have some experience reading music, it will be helpful but is not necessary. All you need is a willingness to learn along with the ability to accept mistakes and to keep trying until together we succeed.  Students who have played previously as well as beginners are welcome.  (Wednesdays)

Spelling Bee Buzz: We'll “bee” working with words both spelling and vocabulary. Find and bring a new word each week to present and challenge the group and so much more.
