Jr. High Electives - 2nd Semester

Junior High elective offerings for 2nd semester are listed below. Elective requests begin on Wednesday, January 9th. Junior high parents will receive information via text the week of January 7th and students will be emailed the link to make their requests on January 9th.

Choir: The Choir elective is open to any student interested in singing and improving vocal technique and confidence. Students will learn basics of sight-reading and harmony and have the opportunity to perform at school programs (Christmas and Spring), special events and at school prayer services and liturgies. Choir is a year-longelective. 

Movie Soundtracks: The Movie Soundtracks elective will focus on composers including John Williams, Machael Kamon, James Horner and Hans Zimmer among others.  This course will highlight memorable movie scores, both current and past and explore the importance of use of symphonic music in the movies.

Rock Band: Calling all guitarists, bassists, drummers and singers! This course is for those musicians who would like to play alongside other musicians in a rock band format. Each musician will be grouped into bands with other musicians according to what they play. Those bands will then write, record and perform their original songs. Some basic instrument experiencenecessary. 

Morning News: Students will be helping create the weekly morning news announcements for this semester. Students will help with filming, writing, anchoring, and producing the news that will be shown weekly on each classroom's smartboard. Interested students must possess strong communication skills and a desire to work collaboratively with peers.

Journey with Jesus: Join Deacon Vince in exploring your Catholic faith in a retreat-like setting. If you are interested in becoming closer with Jesus and deepening your relationship with Him, you won’t want to miss this opportunity! This will be a safe and open environment to share personal testimonies, delve into scripture, listen to peers and reflect on your faith journey as you develop a deeper sense of Jesus in your life.

3-D Animation: Students will be creating their own stop motion animation.  We will be using apps on the iPads to film and record sound. Students will develop their own characters and story line then upload their videos to you tube so their films can be shared.

Photography: In this introductory photography course, students will learn basic photography skills. Students will get the chance to go outside to take pictures as well as practice portrait photography. Students will be provided with a camera but must bring their tablets to class so they can upload their photos. Having a usb/jump drive to store photos would be great to have but not necessary.

Instant Challenge: In a world full of technology integration, this elective fosters the life skills that students need to be successful like teamwork, creativity, problem solving and critical thinking skills. The students will work together in teams each class to find a solution to a given challenge using the above mentioned skills!

Alpha Jump Entrepreneur Club: This yearlong elective is for students who are interested in entrepreneurship! Alpha Jump is a program sponsored by St Ignatius High School that fosters student interest in becoming an entrepreneur!  In the spring, students will participate in a “Shark Tank” type of competition!  Students must be available to compete if they choose this elective. The students will also participate in mini-competitions throughout the school year with a chance to win cash prizes.

Book Club: Calling all readers! Come read, discuss and share together a MYSTERY book. Will it be: When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead, The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin or both? It’s a mystery!

Problem Solving Through Board Games: Let’s play Monopoly, Trouble, Uno and other favorite childhood games to challenge our minds and our classmates.

Spanish Enrichment: If you are interested in developing a deeper understanding of the Spanish language – join Spanish Enrichment! This elective will provide the opportunity to work with a Spanish expert who will provide both challenges as well as support for those interested in the Spanish language and cultures. The program will develop according to student need and interest.(8 each day)

Advanced Physical Education for Boys: This course will provide learning opportunities for students to further develop skills and knowledge related to fitness, physical competence, cognitive understanding and positive attitudes about physical activity. Students will acquire knowledge and skills in recreational, athletic and lifetime activities through active participation, sportsmanship and teamwork. Possible units include Ultimate Frisbee, Hockey, Outdoor Living Skills, Weightlifting, Dance/Yoga, Flag Football and Soccer.

Advanced Physical Education for Girls: This course will provide learning opportunities for students to further develop skills and knowledge related to fitness, physical competence, cognitive understanding and positive attitudes about physical activity. Culinary Arts: A hands-on culinary cooking and baking curriculum for young people. This class will introduce students to the pleasure of preparing and enjoying delicious “real food” that they prepare! Students will learn basic cooking and baking skills, the joy of eating and cooking with all kinds of food! Additional $80 fee for this course.

STEM-Biomedical Engineering: Biomedical Engineering is the application of engineering principles and design concepts to the fields of biology and medicine.  In this elective, students will be introduced to the field, challenged to design devices and gain hands on experiences with biomedical technologies.

Photoshop 1: This course is an introductory course designed to teach the coolest yet complex graphic and image-editing program to students. In Adobe Photoshop CC 2017,students will learn how to edit and manipulate images, easily navigate the Photoshop interface, crop and resize, work with layers, paint using many tools, add text, use gradients, use filters and so much more.

Photoshop 2 (Prerequisite Photoshop 1): In this course students will take their learning to the next level. They will be building composite images with layer masks, crop and resize, use more filter effects, paint,color correct with tone, just to name a few. Students will enjoy creating a film poster, animations,making a photo look like hand-colored art more.
